The core language taught at Chantry is French. We have developed a bespoke curriculum that covers all the components of the Programme of Study for the National Curriculum.
In Key Stage 2, every class has a half an hour French learning each week. Children have opportunity to develop their French language skills as well as learn about French culture and traditions. We follow the Rising Stars scheme for language, which covers a range of topics to enhance language acquisition and grammatical understanding of the language.
In Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, every class also has twenty minutes of French a week, following the Camembear scheme developed by Headstart Languages. This early language acquisition encourages the children’s love for learning a language and enables them to build their vocabulary and confidence for entry into Key Stage 2.
We also use daily incidental French so that throughout the day children hear and use French around the school. Target language is encouraged throughout the day, including at registers and when lining up. We have key classroom instructional language that we utilise throughout the day and displayed around the classroom along with key vocabulary. Children are encouraged to practise their French conversations with other children and adults around school.
