Children are naturally curious. Science at primary school should nurture this curiosity and allow them to ask questions and develop the skills they need to answer those questions. Through teaching science at Chantry Community Academy, we aim to provide our children with the foundations they need to understand the world around them in a purposeful, interesting and exciting way. Exploration is a vital part of a child’s learning and the teaching and learning of science, as much as possible, is done through the use of first-hand practical experiences. At Chantry, children build up their scientific skills, knowledge and vocabulary as they progress through the school, developing the necessary ability to investigate, question, discuss and understand scientific concepts.
Our teachers have a secure understanding of the science they teach within their year group as well as an overview of the progression of the subject across the school. They plan creative and memorable science lessons that include experiments and practical activities to enhance and extend the children’s learning and understanding of the subject.
By linking the science curriculum to our ‘Skills for Life’ values our children learn to:
- Respect the world around them,
- Demonstrate excellence in their learning and understanding,
- Cooperate when working practically,
- Continually develop their independence,
- Persevere to answer challenging questions,
- Demonstrate enjoyment of the subject.
They are also given the opportunity to learn about how science, and their understanding of it, benefits their future life through workshops, visitors and educational visits. This may include visits to museums, workshops in school about a particular science topic or visitors that use science as a part of their job delivering a Skills for life assembly.
